Prop firm rules explained (July 2026)

Every rule that decides whether you pass, stay funded and get paid — drawdown, profit targets, daily loss limits, consistency and payouts — explained simply, with concrete examples and a side-by-side table for every futures prop firm.

The rules, explained with examples

Trailing drawdown

The maximum-loss line follows your highest balance, so it rises as you profit. It only stops trailing once it reaches your starting balance (then it locks).

Example

50K account, $2,500 trailing drawdown. Your balance peaks at $52,000 → the liquidation line trails up to $49,500. If price drops and you hit $49,500, the account is closed — even though you started the day at $51,000.

End-of-day (EOD) drawdown

The maximum-loss line is only recalculated at the session close, using your end-of-day balance. Intraday swings don't move it.

Example

50K account, $2,000 EOD drawdown. Intraday you can dip to -$1,800 and recover; the line only updates when the day closes above water. More forgiving for scalpers who recover within the day.

Static drawdown

A fixed dollar line that never trails. Simple and predictable: you know your exact liquidation level from day one.

Example

50K static account with a $2,000 max loss → you are closed only if your balance ever touches $48,000, no matter how high you climbed before.

Profit target

The profit you must reach to pass the evaluation. It scales with account size — roughly 6% across most firms.

Example

25K → +$1,500 · 50K → +$3,000 · 100K → +$6,000 · 150K → +$9,000. Hit the target without breaching drawdown and you pass.

Daily loss limit (DLL)

Some firms add a separate daily cap: lose more than this in one day and the day (or the account) is locked, independent of the overall drawdown.

Example

A 100K account with a $1,800 DLL closes your trading for the day once you're down $1,800 — even if your overall drawdown still has room.

Consistency rule

Limits how much a single day can represent of your total profit. Often checked at payout. The lower the %, the steadier you must be.

Example

A 50% consistency rule on $4,000 of profit means no single day may exceed $2,000. One lucky $3,000 day can delay your payout until you balance it out.

Payout conditions

To withdraw, firms usually require a number of winning days, a minimum profit buffer above your starting balance, and sometimes a waiting period between withdrawals.

Example

Typical: 5 winning days of $200+ each, then withdraw up to a capped amount per request. Alpha Futures caps at $15,000 per request; many firms pay 100% of your split once eligible.

Profit split

The share of profits you keep. 80–100% is common; some firms give 100% on a first tranche then less.

Example

100% up to $10,000 then 90% means the first $10K is fully yours; beyond that you keep $0.90 per $1 of profit.

Rules for every account, by prop firm

For each firm: the drawdown model(s), profit split, payout rules, and the profit target & max loss for every account size. Profit target is ≈6% of the account size; max loss is the standard drawdown per size. Figures are regular and should be confirmed on each firm's official site. Click a firm to expand.

Prop firm rules — FAQ

What is the difference between trailing and EOD drawdown?+

A trailing drawdown follows your highest balance and can trigger intraday, so a winning trade that pulls back can still close your account. An EOD (end-of-day) drawdown is only recalculated at the session close, so intraday dips don't permanently move your line as long as you close above it. EOD is generally more forgiving; trailing is stricter.

How much profit do I need to pass a prop firm evaluation?+

Most futures firms set the profit target at about 6% of the account size: roughly $1,500 on a 25K, $3,000 on a 50K, $6,000 on a 100K and $9,000 on a 150K. You must reach it without breaching the drawdown or daily loss limit.

What is a daily loss limit?+

It's a separate cap on how much you can lose in a single day. Hit it and your trading is locked for the day (or the account fails), independent of your overall drawdown. Not every firm uses one — check each firm's page.

How do prop firm payouts work?+

After you're funded, you usually need a set number of winning days (often 5 at $150–$200+ each) and a profit buffer above your starting balance before you can withdraw. Payouts are capped per request and may have a waiting period; the firm pays your profit-split share.

What is the consistency rule?+

It limits how much a single day can represent of your total profit (e.g. a 50% rule means no day exceeds half your gains). It pushes steady performance over one-off lucky days and is often verified at payout time.

What profit split do prop firms offer?+

Commonly 80–90%, with some firms offering 100% on a first tranche (e.g. 100% up to $10,000) then a lower split. A high split should always be read alongside drawdown, consistency and fees.

Can I trade the news on a prop firm account?+

It depends on the firm and the phase. Some allow news trading in both evaluation and funded phases, others restrict it. The rules table below shows news-trading availability per firm.

One-time payment or monthly subscription — which is cheaper?+

A one-time payment (OTP) charges once for the evaluation; a subscription bills monthly while the eval is active. OTP is cheaper if the eval drags on; subscriptions can be cheaper if you pass fast. Also factor activation fees and market-data fees.

What happens if I hit my drawdown?+

Breaching the maximum loss (trailing, EOD or static) closes the account immediately. In evaluation you can usually buy a reset or a new account; in the funded phase you lose the funded account and must re-evaluate.

Do the rules change between the evaluation and the funded account?+

Often yes. Drawdown type, daily limits and payout conditions can differ between the challenge and the funded (PA) phase. Each firm's page lists both phases side by side.
